Wild and unpredictable, brother to the sea, older than the creatures that walk the earth or swim in her waters, the Changer delights in countless shapes. When someone attempts to wipe out his family, the Changer discards coyote form and descends from the wilderness to call in a few favors from none other than King Arthur himself.
But Arthur has problems of his own. The Lustrum Review is about to meet and the tenuous accord that holds the athanor community in loose alliance is being challenged. Some of the challengers merely desire to see a few restrictions dropped. Others wish to see the Accord destroyed – and if Arthur and his closest allies are destroyed with it, they would be delighted.
For Arthur, the Changer’s arrival, ominous as it may be could also be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how the Accord serves even the most ancient among their immortal community. He also hopes that their alliance will serve to anchor this wild one more firmly to his cause.
Yet nothing is ever that simple. Before the Changer takes his revenge, those who have called themselves gods and have been the root of many a heroic legend will find themselves threatened with destruction. The very earth itself will shake. And a coyote pup―sole survivor of the Changer’s murdered family―will discover both her weakness and her hidden strength.

Changer Athanor Book 1 edition by Jane Lindskold Literature Fiction eBooks

I am two thirds of the way through this book, which I cannot put down, and had to stop and write a review. This is one of the best paranormal novels I have read in a very long time. While I love really good fantasy, much of it is wrapped around romance and steamy sex with a lot of "will she, won't he?" tension in the mix. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I love Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh, and J.R. Ward and many other women who have given me many hours of reading bliss. But "The Changer" reminds me of a Neil Gaiman novel without the cynicism of American Gods. Jim Butcher fans, Heinlein devotees and anyone who loves being lost in an alternate universe created by an able author in total control of her subject would enjoy this book. It helps to be familiar with the Roman pantheon, the Arthurian story and early mythology but it's not necessary. When I finish the book I might add to this review but as it stands, I totally recommend this novel.

Changer Athanor Book 1 edition by Jane Lindskold Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I liked the premise, which was interesting if perhaps a bit pat, but I found myself drifting away from the story toward the end. The story began with a brooding protagonist who has been wronged and then lost its focus and wound down into an exchange of windy hypotheticals and finally a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion. All in all, though, I thought the characters were interesting and could make for a wealth of enjoyable stories.
This is a book I'm glad I read, but will not reread. The concept of the immortal Athenor is neat and the relationships between them is well explored. The plot is intricate. But Lindskold does not create a protagonist I can identify with. Changer is the main character in the book and he comes across as one dimensional an incredibly ancient being devoted to his family. Several side characters (Changer's daughter, Rebecca, the two humans) are promising protagonist candidates (and I note that a second book is titled Changer's Daughter), but Changer himself is not.
Urban fantasy is hard to find -- there are few authors out there, and many of them (sorry, Mr. DeLint) are getting a little tired. I was overwhelmingly pleased to find Jane Lindskold's Changer -- it was subtle and intelligent, light-handed and complex, and if nothing else a brilliant character study. It made me go back and look at my Jospeh Campbell, to study up on hero myths, and think about why exactly it is that we all want to believe, as a reviewer mentioned below, that beings such as the Athanor do really exist. I have since tracked down several of Lindskold's earlier works, and while more heavy-handed, you can still see the attention to character and the fascination with technology interlinked with the fantastic. I have ordered the next Athanor novel, and am sure it will be as good, if not better.
I could go no higher than three stars basically because this is not what I normally read. I regret not reading enough of the sample in the book offering to realize the nature of the story. I offer my apology to the author.
I first encountered Ms Jane Lindskold in a short story included in Worlds of Honor, by David Weber, and was impressed enough to purchase Changer. This work I would classify as fantasy as there is very little hard science in it. This is NOT a liability, even though I normally prefer hard SF. I would certainly class this tale with any that Larry Niven has done with his fantasy magic series. I classify Niven as one of the current masters - his predecessors no longer living or writing - just kidding Larry.
I normally do not give authors 5 stars, but in this case I could not find anything wrong. The characters are well established, consistent, interesting, and the tale moves seamlessly.
The story introduces us to the Athanor, an immortal species co-existing with us in contemporary time. The central figure, "The Changer" gives us an interesting character, whose value system is quite unique. Being a shapeshifter who prefers animal shapes and there relationships, causes friction with normal human values and relationships (sorry folks this is as close to one of the plot lines you will get from me).
The premise of the story is intriguing and the flow of story lines and characters kept me turning the pages (I polished off the 499 pages in a weekend - I was hooked).
Being older than dirt (according to the grand children) and apparently outliving the Science Fiction masters of my age, I am continually searching for good authors who will be replacing them. I feel extremely fortunate in finding Ms Lindskold and being able to add her to my list. I look forward to more of her work (maybe some hard SF?). This tale needs to be read as well as this author.
I liked this book. When I started it, based on the synopsis, I was pretty sure that it would be one of those stories that I never would finish. To my happy surprise, it caught my imagination immediately and I wanted to see where Ms. Lindskold would go with it! It's an interesting take on ancient myths and legendary characters, set in contemporary times. I especially found the Changer character to be intriguing. I've started the sequel (Changer's Daughter) and hope it stays as engaging to the end.
Enjoyable example of a "gods as people" story. I liked the tie in with various world mythologies.

There seemed to be a few too many people willing to be villains but this was a minor annoyance for me. Also some of the characters were too cool and matter of fact and I missed some of the wonder that I would expect from godlings fighting even those living in a mundane world. There were SOME scenes that brought this feeling but I felt more could have been written with a little shock and awe.

The main character was suitably remote emotionally (given his age and nature) and contrasted nicely with the more passionate characters.

The non human "gods" or whatever they were also added some humour with their chat room scenes.

I will buy the next book
